FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Anniversary Mass for Our Popes
There will be a parish cluster Mass on the evening of Monday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Sweetest Heart of Mary Church, to commemorate the first month's anniversary of the passing of Pope John Paul II, and to celebrate the election of our new Pope Benedict XVI.

Alumni Mass
The Saint Joseph High School Alumni will attend the 10:30 Latin Mass next Sunday, May 1. The alumni have established a tradition here at Saint Joseph Church by bringing a bagpipe band to process the celebrant into and out of the church. Last year the band gathered in the Social Hall after Mass and treated parishioners and alumni to a concert of traditional Celtic music.

Men's Retreat
You are invited to spend a relaxing, spiritually insightful weekend with the men of our parish Friday evening to Sunday noon. May 13-15, 2005 at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center. For information or reservations call George Eichom at (586) 574-3016 or the Retreat Center at (313) 535-9563.

Mass Intentions
Arrangements for having a Mass celebrated are as simple as a telephone call to the business office at (313) 831-6659. The $10.00 stipend can be mailed to the business office or dropped in the collection basket. Many dates are available for Mass intentions. Deceased loved ones can be enrolled in the Purgatorial Society which schedules Masses randomly throughout the year for the suffering souls. Masses on Wednesday are celebrated for those living or deceased who are enrolled into the Saint Joseph Confraternity at the stipend of $50.00 per name. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the greatest prayer given to us by Our Lord Himself. "Do this in memory of Me."

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Mass for John Paul II
There will be a parish cluster Mass on the evening of Monday, May 2, the first month's anniversary of our Holy Father's death. Until that time we are asked to remember our dear Holy Father in all of our Rest in Peace prayers and to pray for the Cardinals in the conclave as they seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the selection of a new pope.

There are seven bishops including the pope, who are called patriarchs. Eastern Rite Catholic patriarchs have jurisdiction over the faithful in their Churches throughout the world and are subject only to the pope. Currently there is an Eastern Patriarch in Alexandria for the Coptic Catholics, three in Antioch for the Syrian, Greek Melkite and the Maronite Catholics; in Babylon (Iraq) for the Chaldean Catholics and in Cilicia for the Armenian Catholics. Finally, there is a Latin Rite Patriarch in Jerusalem. These patriarchs were recognizable at our Holy Father's funeral by the traditional crowns that they wear.

GOOD FOOD!
We heard many compliments from everyone who attended the banquet on the Feast of Saint Joseph about the delicious food that was prepared by Tony and Phil Tringali. These two young men in their 20s work in their family business, namely Tringali's Fine Foods. They cater for groups as small as 20. Anyone interested in their services can reach them at (586) 992-1950. This is the third time that they have catered for us here at Saint Joseph Church and we haven't been able beat their prices or service. We only have a microwave equipped warming kitchen in our hall which limits our food preparation.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
The Parish Council will meet on Monday, April 11, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Hall.

Gratitude for St. Joseph's Day
The Saint Joseph Parish Family wishes to thank Fr. Mark Borkowski and our brothers and sisters throughout the cluster for the outpouring of faith during the special observances on the Feast of Saint Joseph in celebration of the Year of the Eucharist. Our Blessed Lord was never alone throughout the five hours of adoration from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The opening Mass and closing Benediction with Vespers were very well attended and the evening banquet was sold out. Special thanks go to all the parishioners, cluster members and guests -- including Fr. Mark -- who provided such an abundance of desserts that the leftovers were still being enjoyed during the coffee hour on Palm Sunday morning.

The St Joseph Purgatorial Society
offers Masses throughout the year for your deceased loved ones. Anyone wishing to participate in this work of mercy toward the Poor Souls in Purgatory should write the names of those loved ones on a piece of paper along with a $10 stipend for each Mass you wish to have said. No limit for the amount of names per Mass. Put this in an envelope in the collection basket with "Purgatorial Society" written on the front. You may also mail these intentions with stipends to the business office at 4440 Russell, Detroit, MI 48207
