WE NEED ADVERTISERS for our bulletin. Ads cost $300 per year. Parish Publications is losing money on our bulletin for lack of advertisers and is considering dropping our business. Ads can be commercial or personal. If you know of businesses who might be good candidates to place ads in our bulletin please notify the bulletin editor, Patrick Degens at 586 463-6178 or call the business office 313-831-6659 and give the information to our secretary, Chris Hubbard. Many thanks!

WE STILL NEED USHERS!
Mike Singelyn
is the interim captain of the ushers' club. Men and women who are able to usher at our regular Sunday Masses and the monthly German Mass are asked to call Mike at 313-885-5333 to volunteer their services.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Special thanks to Justin and Leslie Karr, Marian Burns and all of their many helpers who made the Halloween party such a great success. Our tiny one-page bulletin could not hold all the names of everyone who contributed time, talent and funding to bring about this first cluster Halloween party. We sold out! The Bishop Plagens Council of the Knights of Columbus funded a large part of the event. This is possible because of the numerous fund raising activities that the Knights sponsor throughout the year. Christmas in July, the cook-out during the Freedom Festival Fireworks, and the sale of Christmas Cards enable the Knights to contribute to the activities in our three parishes that include our annual summer picnic and dinners within the cluster. Christmas cards are now on sale in the church vestibule, a fund raising activity of the Knights. The annual Tootsie Roll sale benefits the mentally impaired. The Knights also contribute to seminarians, as well as victims of national calamities besides the support given within our three-parish cluster.

ALTAR CLOTHS
Our altar cloths are in poor condition. Many were cast-offs from other churches and do not fit our altars properly. People or groups can donate an altar cloth in memory of, or in honor of another person, or in their own name. Altar cloths that are donated will have a label sewn in with the name of the donor(s). Donations can also be made to a general altar cloth fund. Anyone interested in this endeavor can make a donation marked for that purpose and put it in the collection basket or send it to the parish office. Idea: anniversary, birthday, or Christmas gifts etc. for the person who has everything, donate toward an altar cloth in their name.
Prices: High altar $300; Mary altar $350; Saint Joseph altar $350; movable altar $250. The side altars require specially fitted cloths because of the unique construction of those altars. Naturally we need more than 1 cloth for each altar so that while one is being laundered, another takes its place.

There will be activities, games, prizes, hot dogs and chicken salad sandwiches along with other refreshments. Come spend an afternoon enjoying Halloween activities here at St. Joseph’s. The donation for parents, grandparents or other adult is $5.00 per person. Children’s tickets are free and are sponsored by our Bishop Plagens Council of the Knights of Columbus. Go To Joseph!
In 1977 a hospitality kitchen and clinic run by a Catholic group in Los Angeles needed $64,000 to purchase the building they were renting. After receiving an eviction notice, they set out to raise the money. Mother Teresa of Calcutta happened to visit. She told the community to petition St. Joseph, to write out their petition and tie it to a statue of St. Joseph. The parishioners got the pastor’s permission and tied a note to the finger of St. Joseph’s statue at the local parish. And they prayed! Within two weeks they had received $55,000, with the largest gift of $5,000 coming from someone in Alaska whom they did not even know. There are petition slips in front of our statue of Saint Joseph and a basket just inside the communion rail where they may be placed. Our parish archives are filled with answers to prayer through the intercession of St. Joseph. Countless people both Catholic and Protestant have made donations to this church as acts of thanksgiving in appreciation for these favors. The most recent came last month when a bus load of pilgrims came from Belle River, Ontario.

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

BAKE SALE TODAY
Today in the Social Hall there will be a bake sale to raise money for the restoration of the electric candelabra at the rear of the church. One candelabra has returned after being hopelessly smashed by an act of vandalism. We hope to raise the $500 deductible that the parish had to pay the insurance company for its restoration and to polish and lacquer its twin so that they match once more. Bake sales will continue on the first Sunday of each month. Everyone is asked both to bake and to buy an item.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
Friday, October 7th. Bishop John M. Quinn will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary with a Eucharistic Procession and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Bishop Quinn will rededicate the newly restored main altar. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Everyone in the cluster is invited to attend. What a beautiful way to honor Our Blessed Mother during the month of the Holy Rosary. “Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” -- Our Lady of Fatima, 1917
