PRAYER REQUEST
Quentin and Gerthugh Clark are both in
the Oakpointe Villa Nursing Home, 18901 Meyers at 7 Mile Rd. Their room
telephone is 313-573-4820. Quentin had major surgery due to a blockage in
the colon and will recover slowly due to his diabetes. Gerthugh fell at
home and the door had to be broken down to get to her. They are both in
good spirits but have asked for prayers. They will celebrate their 55th
wedding anniversary on August 25th. They were married here at Saint Joseph
Church and this year is the first time that they have ever missed our annual
picnic in all those 55 years. Quentin ushers at the 10:30 Mass, was head
of our St. Vincent de Paul Society for 50 years and was head of the Usher’s
Club until just recently. He and Gerthugh have worked on nearly every project
that has ever occurred here in the last 55 years. This was our first picnic
in memory that Quentin wasn’t grilling Brats. Please keep
them in prayer. They are precious to this parish. Get
involved in the Parish Council!
All parishioners are welcome to attend the meetings and participate in
the governance of the parish. You
can download the minutes from the last meeting here.
REGISTRATION
If you have been attending St. Joseph Parish but have not
registered as a parishioner, please consider joining us! You can download
a registration form
here. Once you have completed it, please drop it into the collection basket
at Mass, or send it to the address at the top of the sheet.
Don't forget Daily Mass!
Fr. Mark has reinstated daily Mass in our cluster. Mass is held
Monday and Tuesday in Latin, and Wednesday in English at St. Joseph's
at 12:10 p.m. Thursday noon Mass is at St. Josaphat's, and Fridays at
Sweetest Heart of Mary, also at noon. Take the time for midday worship!
We desperately need more advertisers for
our church bulletin! At the present time we are down to
one patron. We need 13 to pay for our printing. Suburban parishes are
subsidizing the bulletins for St. Joseph & Sweetest Heart of Mary
but will not continue to do so much longer. We will soon have a combined
bulletin for our cluster. One unit of advertising 1 x 2 1/2 inches is
$332.47 per year. A half unit 1/2 x 2 1/2 is $202.54. Please contact the
parish office if you know of anyone who will advertise with us
WE STILL NEED USHERS!
Mike Singelyn is the interim captain of the ushers' club. Men
and women who are able to usher at our regular Sunday Masses and the monthly
German Mass are asked to call Mike at 313-885-5333 to volunteer their
services.
Choral Mass schedule
The choir is currently on summer break.
A new season is tentatively set to begin on September 10.
Details on the new season will appear on News page and the Music Schedule
page.
New choir members -- trained or not -- are
very welcome!

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Quentin and Gerthugh Clark are
still in Oakpointe Nursing Home since July 1st, 18901 Meyers, corner of
7 Mile Rd. Detroit 48235. Visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Bake Sales resume next Sunday!
We need more people to bake. Three ladies including Sister Judie Ann have
been baking a minimum of 40 to 60 items apiece per bake sale. We need
more folks to bake. We seem to have plenty of folks who want to buy the
baked goods. Profits now go to help pay utilities. Our candelabra has
been sent out for restoration, which was the goal of our bake sales last
year.
Didn't get the parish e-letter?
Some people who signed up for the parish e-letter did not receive the
first issue, which was sent out last Monday. This happened due to one
of two reasons:
1. You didn't respond to the confirmation e-mail.
Our contract with the Internet mass mailing service requires that we
send the newsletter only to people who have signed up and confirmed
their interest. To confirm, open the e-mail that was sent to you shortly
after you signed up, and click on link that says "Yes,
I want to join!" This will activate your subscription
and you'll receive the next issue of the newsletter.
2. You're a Comcast subscriber. For unknown reasons,
Comcast blocked the newsletter from all subscribers on our list, and
bounced it back. We're working on the problem. Meanwhile, you can help
us out. Put the our editor's e-mail address editor@saint-joseph-detroit.org
into an e-mail and forward it to this-is-not-spam@comcast.net.
If you haven't subscribed to the newsletter, but would like to, you can
do so at our subscription page. It's completely
free.
OKTOBER CHORAL FEST
The German Community who worship here at Saint Joseph is planning the
largest fund raising activity ever hosted by our parish. It will take
place on Sunday, October 22nd. The German Mass will move to 10:30 that
day. A buffet dinner will be served in the Social Hall from noon to 2:30
pm. At 3:00 pm, the activity will move to the church for a fantastic concert
featuring the following German choirs: Carpathia, Schwäbischer Männerchor,
Teutonia Windsor and GBU - Saxonia Rheingold.
Unfortunately, the White Pine Glee Club, a group of Japanese singers
mentioned in the bulletin, will be unable to participate this year, but
we hope to see them next year.
Each choir will perform one classical, one religious and one folk song.
Also featured will be soloists, duets and trios.
Before and after the performance, a meal and dessert will be served in
the hall. A tent will be set up adjacent to the hall.
We will need a host of volunteers from the parish in order to
make this a success. As mother used to say, “Many hands
make light work.” Look for sign-up sheets today; to fill all the
positions that we will need to make this event a resounding success! Bill
Mozer has donated a Baldwin piano to the church for this event and it
will be moved to the Social Hall afterwards to replace our poor old worn-out
piano.
WATCH WHERE YOU PARK!
Some folks who have trouble walking usually park on Jay Street in front
of the church. On weekdays, an overzealous policewoman has been issuing
tickets to anyone parked within 15 feet of the corner of Jay and Orleans.
Apparently there is an ordinance against parking too close to a corner
or blocking the crosswalk.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
AN INVITATION: Open House
The Bishop Plagens Council of the Knights of
Columbus that serves the three parishes in our cluster will host
an open house on Wednesday of this week at 8:00 pm in our Social Hall.
Through their own various fundraising activities, the Knights are able
to sponsor various fundraising events and dinners that benefit each of
the parishes in our cluster. Besides serving our cluster churches, the
Council was able to send a $1,000 donation to a Catholic church in Louisiana
that was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. There are many other worthy causes
that the Council financially and physically supports outside of our cluster
in performing Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy. All men age 18 and
over are invited to the open house on Wednesday with the hope that they
will become members of this vibrant Catholic group. Membership in the
K of C also features very affordable life insurance. The schedule for
Wednesday is as follows:
Officers meeting at 6:00 pm
General membership meeting at 7:00 pm
Open house with refreshments at 8:00 pm

Special Observance
Thursday of this week is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
It celebrates the defeat of Chosroes, King of Persia , who in the 7th
century had sacked Jerusalem and taken the True Cross from the Church
of the Holy Sepulcher back to Persia. Heraclius, the Catholic emperor,
defeated Chosroes and returned the True Cross to its place in the Church
of the Holy Sepulcher. Fragments of the Cross have been spread throughout
the world. Here at St. Joseph’s we will have veneration of our relics
of the Passion on the Vigil of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, this
coming Wednesday after the noonday novena to St. Joseph. Our cross shaped
reliquary contains a fragment of the cross, of the crown of thorns, of
the sponge, of the flagellum and a chip from the pillar of the scourging.
The month of September is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of our
Blessed Mother. They begin with the prophecy of Simeon when Jesus
was presented in the Temple and Simeon prophesied that a sword of sorrow
would pierce our Lady’s soul. The other six sorrows are the flight
into Egypt, Jesus being lost for 3 days, the meeting on the way to the
crucifixion, Jesus being taken down from the cross and laid in Mary’s
arms, and finally His burial in the tomb.

Rosary Quotes
“The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments
of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of concerns; in it I
have always found comfort. Twenty-four years ago, on October 29,1978,
scarcely two weeks after my election to the See of Peter, I frankly admitted,
“The Rosary is my favorite prayer. A marvelous prayer! Marvelous
in its simplicity and its depth.” -- Pope John Paul II from
his encyclical “Rosarium Virginis Mariae #2”
“Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the World.”
-- Our Lady at Fatima Portugal 1917
