February
2007 Adult Faith Formation has begun. See the schedule for details. The biweekly classes are also listed on the parish calendar. Schedule change! Get involved in the Parish Council! REGISTRATION Don't forget Daily Mass! News: February 25, 2007 Last week's wine tasting was an impressive success, thanks to the organization and hard work of Justin and Leslie Karr, and the others who volunteered to help them. This column always claims every parish event was successful, but the Karrs were able to conjure up hosts with a wonderful array of wines and good knowledge about them, delicious food, and beautiful medieval music, all enjoyed by a large number of attendees. The parish owes them a great debt of gratitude. One is also struck by the wonderful atmosphere of love and charity that has developed among volunteers over the past year or so, as they work on events like this. This makes it a pleasure to help in such projects. News: February 18, 2007 The Parish Council will meet tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in the Social Hall. Council meetings are open to all parishioners. Everyone interested in the future of our parish is encouraged to attend our council meetings and offer their input. Gerard (Jerry) Paul Gray, 66, passed away peacefully at his Rochester Hills home on Monday, February 12, after a protracted struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. His funeral mass was celebrated here at St. Joseph's on Thursday, February 15, 2007. Jerry was well known and very active in the parish. Besides organizing and volunteering for numerous events, and helping the parish in many ways, large and small, Jerry, along with Rod Bloedow, worked out a way to stabilize the frame of the enormous Anthony bell in our steeple, thereby preventing a repeat of the bell's fateful 13-story plummet to the basement in 1873. People who worked with Jerry around the parish will remember his amazing ability to facilely solve seemingly any technical problem, from improvising a perfect funnel from pop bottles right up to his work on the Anthony bell. Those who spent time with him in his last year were awed at the model way in which he accepted and prepared for his impending death. He taught much to many. His family suggests that memorial donations be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Detroit, or the National Jewish Medical Center, Denver, Colorado. Online guestbook www.modetzfuneralhomes.com. Our food pantry helps feed the elderly poor who live within a short radius of the 3 churches in our cluster. Many of these folks walk to Sweetest Heart of Mary rectory for a bag of groceries. Because of our limited supplies, only one bag of groceries per person is allowed per month and each person receiving groceries has to present a photo identification and is checked off our list. This ensures a fair distribution of our resources. Lately our food pantry has been running out of food by the end of the day on Monday. Please remember those less fortunate folks who come to us for monthly assistance. Our Lord promises us that He will reward us a hundredfold for anything we give to the less fortunate in His name. It is sad indeed to see an elderly person walk up to the rectory door and see a note that our food pantry has emptied out on the first day of the week. All correspondence to St. Joseph Church should be addressed to our business office at 4440 Russell St., Detroit 48207. This is the address for Sweetest Heart of Mary Rectory that serves as the business office for all 3 churches in our cluster. Anyone wishing to send mail to Sister Judie Ann Ruggirello (Sisters of Christian Love) should address it to 36150 Moravian, Clinton Township, MI 48035-1147. News: February 11, 2007 Gerthugh Clark, widow of Quentin, has returned home after a 6 1/2 month stay at Oakpointe Nursing Home. She would appreciate any visitors from St. Joseph Church. Her niece recently retired and is staying with Gerthugh. The Clark home is at 19783 Coyle, northwest of the intersection of M-10 (John Lodge Fwy) and 7 Mile Rd. (313) 342-2311. The parish family extends their sympathy to our Parish Council President, Craig Larsen, upon the recent death of his mother, Sylvia Larsen. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the Mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Wine Tasting The feast of Saint Valentine, the 3rd century priest and martyr, is celebrated on February 14, the day that he was beheaded. Actually there are 9 other Saint Valentines recognized by the Church. One is a 19th century Polish Saint Valentine, who is depicted in one of the two largest stained glass windows at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church. People in medieval times believed that birds paired off on February 14. It was considered a special day for love to abound because of the natural law turning birds into “love birds”. News: February 4, 2007 The Holy Name Society of Catholic laymen owes its origin to the Council of Lyons in 1274. Its full title is The Confraternity of the Most Holy Name of God and Jesus. From its beginning it was entrusted to the Dominicans. Our Holy Name Society meets the 2nd Sunday of each month for corporate Communion at the 10:30 Mass. New members are always welcome!
